Foul play not suspected as actor Gene Hackman, wife and dog found dead in home, sheriff says

Actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 64, were found dead alongside a dog in their New Mexico home on Wednesday afternoon, local law enforcement told ABC News.

The couple was found during a welfare check after their neighbor called in concerned about their well-being, Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Denise Avila said.

“Foul play is not suspected as a factor in those deaths at this time however exact cause of death has not been determined,” the office said in a statement.

The Academy Award-winning actor, who starred in “The French Connection,” “The Conversation” and “The Royal Tenenbaums,” among dozens of other Hollywood hits, was 95.

The investigation into the deaths is “active and ongoing,” the office said. The home is in Santa Fe’s Hyde Park area, police said.
